While pursuing his Master of Social Work degree at Clark-Atlanta University, Muhammad was diagnosed with kidney failure due to chronic high blood pressure. Three hours a day, for three days per week in a dialysis clinic provided Muhammad with a lot of time to think about all the things he wished he could do with his life. In addition to becoming a social worker to help others, Muhammad always had dreams of starting his own business and traveling the world. By 2001, Muhammad felt like his dreams would forever be on hold until his sister, Ayesha saved his life by donating one of her kidneys to him. From the moment he woke up from the transplant operation, Muhammad vowed to live his life to the fullest and to chase his dreams.
Abdul-Rahmaan I. Muhammad is the Executive Director and Founder of the multidimensional social service agency, My People Clinical Services. Founded on March 5, 2005, My People Clinical Services offers a wide array of programs that include: Fatherhood Engagement Services, Supportive Housing for Young Adults, Individual and Family Therapy, Supervised Visits, Community School Integration, Foster Care Training and Home Studies, My People Clinical Services also host a yearly Female Empowerment Conference for middle and high school students. The driving philosophy of My People Clinical Services is derived from the agencies mission statement: “To enable My People to help Your People so that Our People will succeed”. My People has 85 staff that on a daily basis commit to Support, Empower and help to Rebuild the individuals and families we serve. In 2018, My People Clinical Services added a non-profit arm to the agency named My People Community Services to further their work in the Greater Hartford community.
Muhammad is a skilled motivational speaker, spoken word artist, trainer, writer, world traveler and host. Muhammad developed a number of Fatherhood Trainings to help staff better engage, address their issues with fathers and remove barriers. He also created the Fatherhood Manologues and the Dad+ Initiative to share stories about fatherhood and emphasize the importance of fathers to their children’s lives. Muhammad has authored four children’s books (My Dad’s a Black Super Hero, The New Bird, The 7 Secrets of Super Heroes and DREAM), a collection of poetry (Soapbox Poetry) and a two motivational books (The Dream Chasers Workbook and Dream Energizers). He has produced two spoken word CD’s (Soapbox Poetry and Real Brothers, Real Sisters Do Real Things). Muhammad hosts a wide range of community shows (Walk N’ Talk, Closet Chef and Community Spotlight) that are posted to social media sites. Muhammad also created a community event called Ice Cream for a Dream in which he exchanges ice cream with anyone who will answer the question, “What is your dream?”.
Muhammad received his Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology from Tougaloo College and received his Master of Social Work degree from Clark-Atlanta University. He is a brother of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Incorporated, a member of The National Association of Black Social Workers and the NAACP. He is on the Board of Directors for Capital Community College. Muhammad is married to his beautiful wife, Dayeshell and is the proud father of three children, Aminah, Amirah and Amir and the grandfather to Cairo.
1. Turning 50 Barrier to Fatherhood Engagement into 50 Opportunities to Fatherhood Engagement (90 minutes) a. There are many barriers that get in the way of engaging fathers some we can control… others, we can’t, however; what if we looked at those barriers differently and thought of ways to turn what is perceived as a barrier into an opportunity to better engage and work with fathers.
2. 21 Levels of Fatherhood Engagement (90 minutes) a. The deeper the engagement, the great the outcomes for fathers. Ask yourself, “How many levels will I go to engage and support fathers?” This training goes through each level of engagement and uses role play to help participants experience the impact of engaging fathers.
3. 10 Steps to Working with Fathers Beyond Engagement (90 minutes) a. Not every case is difficult to engage. This training explores with participants the steps to working with fathers once engagement isn’t an issue to reach positive outcomes for fathers and their children.
4. Full Day Fatherhood Engagement Training a. Comprehensive fatherhood training for individuals seeking to engage, empower and support fathers and paternal family members.
5. Fatherhood Simulation Training a. The purpose of the Fatherhood Engagement Simulation Training is to provide staff that work with fathers the opportunity to improve their father engagement skills through role plays.
6. The Manhood Tree Group(8 sessions) a. The Manhood Tree is a discussion with men about the four hoods: Boyhood, Brotherhood, Fatherhood and Manhood. The purpose of the Manhood Tree discussion is to help men to share their experiences, learn and support each other through their growth as men.
